Much has been written about American Indian history and traditions by outsiders, but written views from the inside are less common. In “When the River Ran Wild!”, Aguilar, a Kiksht Chinook elder, combines the story of his own upbringing on the Warm Springs Reservation with the history of the many tribes of the Columbia River Gorge. He describes life at an Indian boarding school; salmon fishing as a way of life; hunting, trapping, and processing hides; traditional uses of plants; religions and beliefs, customs, warfare, Indian names, and myths and legends. The book is illustrated with historical black & white photographs, many of which are from the author's collection
